The Strawberry that Broke the Camel’s Back

That’s right. Eily is allergic to strawberries.

Take away my soymilk, my pizza, my chinese food. Get rid of yogurt, bagels and tofutti cream cheese, and other delicious snacks! Begone fresh pasta and real butter! Get thee behind me Dairy Queen treats – or any other ice-cream for that matter. So long most crackers, breads, rolls, muffins, cakes, and pies.

Gladly I have done this. Gotten rid of dairy, egg, soy, and rice.

But what I had left was a nightly snack of strawberries and blueberries to satisfy a craving for the sweet and wholesome– and now it’s gone.

To explain: Eily had strawberries for a snack the other evening and stopped eating them after about three bites. She soon had hives on her chest and was “splotchy” (that’s a fancy allergy term) in the bathtub later.

Damn and double damn.

That’s why I don’t blog anymore, friends. Because I’m hungry. I’m hungry and tired – and now I gots no strawberries for comfort.

Feel free to send dairy-free, soy-free, egg-free, peanut-free, tree nut-free snacks in an effort to revive this blog.

Ouch. I won't tell you what is currently in season, or what Weiland's had for sale today.

So not fair!

Hang in there. The strawberries will be waiting for you on the other end.

How ironic. You planted strawberries in your garden just two weeks ago.

Maybe there was some strange chemical on the strawberries.

can you still eat watermelon? because if she becomes allergic to that; it might be time to wean. because a girl can only give up so much.

What about Dreyers fresh fruit frozen strawberry popsicles? Sometimes processing makes a difference. Anyway, they have tangerine, pineapple and mango flavors too.

Do you ever think back to the doctor who told you how low the likelihood was that a second child would have as severe allergies as Z? Not that it would have stopped you from breeding, but wouldn't you have eaten a whole lot more of everything prior to her birth?

I swear I don't know what you eat. Are you wasting away to nothing? Or are you subsisting on nothing but lard and high fructose corn syrup?

I'm hoping that we can manage a swing through Ohio later in the summer- I'll keep you posted!

Strawberries and their kin are dead to me. I don't even acknowledge their multi-seeded presence when I pass them at the grocery store.

mom-
yep, and the critters from the ravine ate them all - i'm sure they did it as an especial favor for me.

have found myself visiting pattycake vegan bakery at least once a week. so weird since i'm not that into baked goods. but desperate times call for desperate measures, and i'm desperate for vegan chocolate cupcakes a lot these days.

sue-
yep, it does. what sucks even more is they just changed the formula for my favorite hemp milk (which i eat with the aforementioned chocolate cupcakes) and it totally stinks now.

geesh.

belsum-
thanks. send food.

anon-
how does one wean? I didn't have to with Zane, but it's looking like i may have to force the issue with miss eily. who are we kidding? i don't have the force of will to withstand that battle right now - i'm weakened by hunger.

zulhai-
yeah, i do substitutes for just about everything these days, what i can't substitute for is ice cream. i just love the dairy-full stuff too much. it's one of those things that it's just better if i avoid.

sandy-
i think about that doctor every 6 months at zane's allergist visit. and he was right - eily's allergies aren't nearly as bad as zane's. they're just bad enough to keep me hungry.

lis-
well, chocolate cupcakes not withstanding, i do eat fairly healthfully. hemp milk, rice bars, pasta, broccoli, meat.

it's good for the waistline, but not for the attitude.

hope to see you.
